Nestled in a small village in the Haute-Marne, Joinville is a meeting place for lovers of great stories. The city of the Guise family is a true Renaissance treasure, with its imposing castle and garden, its former auditorium and the remains of the castle above. Discover this historical and cultural Mecca as a couple or solo on a 2-day getaway.
When you arrive in Joinville, it is impossible to miss the Château du Grand Jardin. This former pleasure pavilion is surrounded by a superb garden with flowerbeds, fruit patches and a labyrinth. A true masterpiece, it will seduce you with its facades and its unique decorations depicting Greco-Roman antiquity and mythology. Also known as the Château d'en bas (Lower Castle), it complemented the Château d'en haut (Upper Castle), the former residence of the seigneuries. In the evening, take a walk up to the vestiges of the castle and admire the panorama of the valley.
The next day, discover the city through a thematic tour "the Treasures of the Guise". On the program, visit the famous religious buildings of the village, including the Sainte-Anne Chapel. Emblematic of the notoriety of the nobles of the time, it is adorned with magnificent stained glass windows from the 16th century. Also discover the cemetery and the tombs of the princes, where the lords of Joinville are buried. And finally, enjoy all the beauty of the city through the mill reach. Note that the pedal boat and the tours must be booked on the first day of the adventure, at 2:00 pm at the Tourist Office.
