Set out on a cycling adventure to explore three cultures across Germany, France, and Switzerland. This 8-day/7-night cycling tour is a loop starting from Freiburg. The daily stages are easy and leisurely, along beautiful bike paths. They’ll let you discover stunning natural scenery amid mountains and vineyards.
Espace Randonnée handles all the logistics for this trip: booking accommodations in comfortable hotels that cater to cyclists, luggage transport, 7-day-a-week phone support, and the option to rent standard or electric bikes. Each day, you’ll follow the route independently, thanks to detailed itineraries and reliable signage. The entire route takes place on bike paths and quiet backroads, with a few gently rolling sections.
Day 1: Arrival in Freiburg
Welcome to Freiburg, a charming German city with a Mediterranean feel. Spend your evening strolling through the historic center and soaking up its welcoming atmosphere.
Day 2: On to Colmar (about 55 km)
You’ll cross the border to reach Colmar, the jewel of Alsace. Its pedestrian-only center, canals, and half-timbered houses will make for a charming arrival.
Day 3: Colmar to Guebwiller (about 41 km)
Head south along the Wine Route. You’ll ride through vineyard-dotted landscapes to Guebwiller, nestled at the foot of the Vosges Mountains. A few climbs punctuate this beautiful stage.
Day 4: Guebwiller to the Mulhouse region—about 35 km
A more leisurely day as you make your way to the Mulhouse region. Take the opportunity to explore the city’s industrial heritage or its renowned museums (Cité du Train, Musée de l’Automobile).
Day 5: Mulhouse area to Basel area—about 3 km
Cycle southward and soak up the Swiss atmosphere as you approach Basel, a vibrant cultural city on the border of three countries.
Day 6: Basel area to Müllheim, about 42 km
Return to Germany through the peaceful landscapes of the Markgräflerland. A pleasant, green stage through the heart of the vineyards.
Day 7: Head toward Freiburg, about 4 km
The final leg of this loop: reach Freiburg via beautiful bike paths, enjoying the last views of the Black Forest’s rolling hills.
Your adventure is coming to an end… or it can continue if you’d like to explore this beautiful region further by bike.
You’ll ride mainly on bike paths along small county roads with little traffic or on paved farm roads. Two stages are slightly hilly. A few short climbs can be made more enjoyable by renting e-bikes.
