Located just 20 minutes from Strasbourg, on the heights of Dinsheim-sur-Bruche in Alsace, the Fort de Mutzig is an astonishing architectural, technical, and military site that will immerse you in a moment of Alsace's history.
Originally named Feste Kaiser Wilhelm II, the Fort de Mutzig is a unique military structure in Europe and the first reinforced concrete, armored, and electrified fortification. Built by the Germans in the municipality of Mutzig, Alsace, it took a quarter of a century to construct, from 1893 to 1918, and housed a garrison of 7,000 soldiers over the years. It was thus the largest and most powerful fort in Europe in 1914, with 50 buildings and 22 heavy cannons, all spread over an area of 254 hectares.
During your free visit to Fort de Mutzig, you will not only explore a giant fortress. You will also discover the living conditions of soldiers during World War I. Equipped with a brochure available in French, German, or English, you will traverse narrow galleries and climb several staircases that will lead you to the various spaces that made up their daily life: the rooms, kitchens, wells, power plant, hospital, and more. Indeed, Fort de Mutzig is the only pre-1914 fortification in the world to retain all of its original equipment.
As you can see, visiting Fort de Mutzig in Dinsheim-sur-Bruche, today a symbol of Franco-German peace and reconciliation, promises to be particularly enriching and moving. A small tip: bring a light sweater, as it can be quite chilly inside the fort.
