Visit a castle unique in Alsace! From the terraces of Château de Lichtenberg, 9 centuries of history await visitors. In turn lordly residence, garrison and today cultural and tourist site, this "ship of the centuries" has stood the test of time and is today a must-see in Alsace and the Northern Vosges. It's perfect for solo, group or family exploration.
Nestled at an altitude of over 400 metres, the castle offers a beautiful view of the Vosges du Nord Regional Nature Park. On a clear day, you can even see the spire of Strasbourg cathedral. The château is open to the public and offers a wide range of facilities. An exhibition area, a discovery trail with hands-on games and explanatory panels will reveal all the secrets of the site. The self-guided tour lasts around 1h30.
During your visit, enjoy an immersive experience and plunge into the heart of history as you meet historical figures and legends who tell the castle's story through sounds, projections and other creative settings. The permanent exhibition "Lichtenberg Castle, a perpetual construction site" allows you to discover the castle's architectural evolution and explore over 800 years of history! A range of interactive workshops will give adults and children the chance to try their hand at architecture, to discover the different periods of construction, and to go behind the scenes of the castle's contemporary restoration.
In 2026, discover the new temporary exhibition "Lichtenberg Castle in the Age of the Builders":
How was a castle built in the Middle Ages?
Who were the men and women involved in these gigantic construction projects?
What techniques and know-how enabled Lichtenberg Castle to survive the centuries?
Plunge into the heart of the great medieval building sites and meet the trades that shaped the castle. From stonemason to master builder, from carpenter to glassmaker, including laborers and specialized craftsmen, discover the organization and diversity of trades on a medieval building site. You'll learn how walls are built, how carpentry is assembled and how a building site is organized from the Middle Ages to today's restoration projects to preserve the site.
