Dive into the heart of History and enjoy a guided tour of the Four-à-Chaux fort in Lembach. Part of the 108 forts of the Maginot Line, this second-class artillery fort was built from 1931 to defend the Franco-German border. A surprising site that will immerse you in the interwar period for the duration of your visit.
Dominating the village of Lembach, the Four-à-Chaux fort will take you up high for a fascinating historical exploration. Damaged during the battles of 1940 and by explosive tests conducted during German occupation, this fortress was restored at the beginning of the Cold War to welcome you today. Put on your walking shoes and descend 30 meters underground to discover the 3 km of galleries within the fort. With 8 blocks, this fortified structure housed 600 soldiers and 24 officers until 1940.
During your visit, you will discover the living conditions of soldiers from that era. Walk through the dormitories, kitchens, infirmary, and sanitary facilities, and imagine the daily life of these men nearly 80 years ago. After their last mobilization in August 1939, these men also built their lives in these places, setting up a small grocery store and acquiring livestock and alcohol from the village of Lembach. A fascinating part of world history that will be further explained during your guided tour.
