Highlights

  • The Château des Rohan in Saverne

  • Saverne marina

  • The world of Hochfelden brewing

  • Arrival in Strasbourg, European capital and cycling city

Between the marina, the brewing traditions and the European capital, this stage takes in an authentic and accessible Alsace, all along the canal.

Starting in Saverne, nicknamed the City of Roses, EuroVelo 5 invites you to cruise peacefully along the Marne-Rhine Canal. The nickname comes from its magnificent rose garden, one of the largest in France, which is well worth a visit: over 8,000 varieties of roses bloom here every year in an enchanting setting. Bordered by trees and picturesque villages, the route is entirely laid out as a greenway, ideal for a leisurely getaway on your own or with the family. At the entrance to the town, the majestic Château du Haut-Barr welcomes you from its promontory, while in the town centre, the Château des Rohan imposes its elegant silhouette on the edge of the canal.

As you continue through the Zorn valley, the open landscapes of the Alsace plain stretch as far as the eye can see. This lush green valley borders the Kochersberg, a landmark of Alsace, famous for its typical villages... and its delicious tarte flambée! The route is punctuated by a number of charming stops, including Hochfelden, where you can discover the world of brewing at Villa Météor, and Wingersheim, famous for its brewery trail, a real immersion in local beer-making traditions. A little further along the route, the Brumath lake invites you to take a refreshing break: popular with swimmers, it also offers a host of outdoor activities for young and old alike. The route always follows the curves of the canal, in a calm, rural atmosphere.

On arrival, Strasbourg stands out as a cultural and architectural jewel. As France's leading cycling city, it has a rich heritage and gentle quaysides. From the Petite France district to the majestic Notre-Dame cathedral, via its flower-decked bridges and cobbled streets, the European capital is a must-stop on your itinerary.
