Saverne, between mountains and canal
A peaceful town typical of Alsace, Saverne and all its treasures can be discovered on foot, by bike or even by boat!
Discover all the facets of Saverne
Crossed by the Canal de la Marne au Rhin, Saverne reveals a peaceful image and offers visitors a real picture-postcard setting.
Take a stroll through the town centre and admire the typical half-timbered houses, such as the splendid Maison Katz. On your way down to the marina, admire the view of the Château des Rohan and its elegant façade of Vosges pink sandstone. Did you know that this building was once known as "Alsace's Little Versailles"?
If you're curious, you can go in search of the unicorn, which has become the town's emblem! As for the epicureans, they can linger on the terrace to enjoy a local beer*.

On the Marne-Rhine canal
Saverne was once an important town and a major commercial crossroads. The legacy of this flourishing past is the Marne-Rhine canal, which runs through the town and can now be explored on water or by bike.
If you've got your sea legs, hop aboard a boat and cruise along more than 300km of canals! Head east to Strasbourg or west along the Saar Canal.
If you prefer cycling, get on your two-wheeler and explore the towpaths along the canal. Numerous cycle routes, such as Eurovelo 5 (which links London to Rome), make for a pleasant and easy ride! Ideal for a family outing!
Haut-Barr Castle
On the heights above Saverne, admire the silhouettes of the medieval castles that stand like sentinels. The mountains of the Vosges are dotted with these remains, which plunge us into another era!
The most famous and best preserved is undoubtedly Haut-Barr Castle, nicknamed "The Eye of Alsace". Built on pink sandstone rocks, it occupied a strategic position between Lorraine and Alsace. Climb to the top for a 360° panoramic view!
A hiker's paradise
Get your trainers on! Saverne is a veritable playground for hiking and nature lovers!
At the gateway to the Parc Naturel Régional des Vosges du Nord and its splendid forests, the signposted footpaths will appeal to young and old alike, whether you're looking for a family outing or a more challenging hike! Take in the astonishing scenery, explore the caves, climb the castles, discover the local legends and admire the breathtaking panoramas...
Saverne is also a stage on the Traversée du Massif des Voges, a legendary route between the GR®53 and GR®5 linking northern Alsace to Belfort (and as far as the Mediterranean for the bravest).
