Go back in time to the Middle Ages
With its dozens of fortified castles, Alsace is as fascinating to budding medievalists as it is to lovers of fine stonework. Its castral heritage is so vast and prodigious that it has even given rise to a dedicated itinerary. The 450km Chemin des châteaux forts d'Alsace (Trail of the fortified castles of Alsace ) winds its way through the foothills of the Vosges mountains, taking in no fewer than 80 legendary fortresses, including the famous Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg.
You can explore these castles on your own or on a guided tour, with fun activities such as Hohlandsbourg or Lichtenberg. It's enough to take the whole family back to the time of the valiant knights!
