-
Authentic Champagne villages, such as Orconte, Eurville-Bienville and Bayard, punctuate the route and invite you to take a break.
-
The diversity of the river and farm landscapes, with reflections of water, meadows and the calm atmosphere of the valley
On this leg, you'll be doing a series of laps along the canal between Champagne and Burgundy, linking Saint-Dizier to Joinville, where you'll be surrounded by nature on the river, quiet villages and an exceptional heritage.
Before leaving Saint-Dizier, take the opportunity to stroll through this Haute-Marne town, which combines its industrial heritage with a rich cultural heritage. As the birthplace of cast iron, you'll find plenty of ornamental cast iron (balconies, candelabras, benches, etc.), as well as the famous Wallace fountains. Another industrial adventure, Miko® ice creams, have long made Saint-Dizier famous the world over. The famous tower now houses a multiplex cinema.
When you get on your bike, you'll find the canal towpath, which will accompany you on your journey in a serene and contemplative atmosphere. This gentle stretch allows you to pedal at your leisure, enjoying an environment where the reflections of the canal and the trees lining the banks create a sense of escape. The villages of Chamouilley, Eurville-Bienville, Bayard-sur-Marne and Autigny-le-Grand mark out your progress, each offering a natural stopping-off point for a photo opportunity or a moment's relaxation out of the saddle.
As you approach Joinville, the landscape retains its gentle Champagne character while gaining in historical depth. The emblematic Château du Grand Jardin, a jewel of the Renaissance, will no doubt arouse your curiosity. As you make your way into the town centre, you'll discover a lively, colourful scene of restored old facades, contemporary urban art and bustling shopping streets, inviting you to extend your discovery.
This is one of the gentlest stages of your itinerary: accessible to all, it has a seductive aquatic atmosphere, Champagne-style views and a finish that makes you want to put the bike down and explore Joinville on foot or from a waterside terrace.
