The Véloroute 52 follows the Marne-Rhine canal peacefully for almost 160 kilometres between Nancy and Strasbourg. This accessible, bucolic stretch links two of the Grand Est's most emblematic towns, while passing through a string of varied landscapes and remarkable cultural sites. On either side of the towpath, Lorraine and Alsace are revealed at a leisurely pace, as the water and locks flow by.

The journey begins in Nancy, the historic capital of Lorraine, where the Place Stanislas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, marks a beautiful start. The route takes in the valleys of the Sânon and Zorn rivers, crosses the countryside of Meurthe-et-Moselle and the edge of the Lorraine Regional Nature Park, before opening up to the wooded landscapes of the Moselle and then the orchards and vineyards of Alsace. Sarrebourg, with its museum and stained-glass window by Chagall, then Saverne and its majestic Château des Rohan are just some of the cultural stops along the way.

Along the way, you'll meet lots of people: lock-keepers, fishermen, cyclists and local residents, all of whom will share their warmth and good addresses. Each lock offers a new setting, with traditional houses, metal bridges and fragments of industrial memory.

Mainly laid out as a greenway, the V52 offers a smooth, accessible route, perfect for a relaxing cycling break. Whether you're looking for a weekend cycling break or a longer adventure, the route is seductive for its ease, the regularity of its greenways and its many rail connections. It is also the forerunner of a future major Paris-Strasbourg cycle route, uniting Champagne, Lorraine and Alsace under the banner of escape by bike.
