Let yourself be swept away by a rare and deeply moving lyrical experience at the Opéra national de Nancy-Lorraine. In a new diptych, director Silvia Costa plunges you into a universe where pain becomes poetry, and madness reveals a powerful inner force. A blend of Japanese tradition and contemporary creation, two works engage in dialogue around the same theme: disappearance, wandering and feminine resilience.
Curlew River, Benjamin Britten’s Noh-inspired masterpiece, transposes the inner journey of a woman in search of her lost son. Originally performed only by men, the opera is here revisited with a female chorus, bringing a new dimension to this mystical parable. Purity of movement, intensity of silence, depth of voice: every scenic element underlines the raw emotion of the story.
A world premiere by Marko Nikodijević, composed as part of the NOX (Nancy Opera Xperience) laboratory. This new opera explores the symbolic origins of the river of mourning, in a powerful visual ritual: a woman digs into the earth, pours out her tears, and gives birth to a place where we cry and are reborn. The libretto, written by Silvia Costa, extends Britten’s reflections, giving them a feminine and timeless origin.
Part opera, part performance, part ceremony, this creation offers a moment of great artistic and human intensity.
