At the Ecomusée d’Alsace, a unique and captivating event is in the offing, bringing with it the splendor of spring. On the day of Pentecost, it’s here that the Pentecost foliage procession will unfurl. An Alsatian tradition that reawakens the magic of nature, and the ancient belief in its spirits. A must-see for all those who want to marvel, have fun and immerse themselves in the authentic Alsace of yesteryear!
The Alsace Ecomuseum, a charming replica of an Alsatian village from the early 20th century, comes alive under a clear May sky. With its half-timbered houses, picturesque alleyways and verdant fields, it lives to the rhythm of the seasons, and Pentecost heralds the brilliance of spring.
So, on May 19 and 20, 2024, the celebration begins at 10:30 a.m. with an authentic tractor ride. A new departure every half-hour will be scheduled to delight all visitors, offering them a breathtaking view of the bucolic Alsatian landscape. At 3:00 p.m., the Pentecostal foliage procession will then take you to the heart of tradition, featuring a parade of fascinating and bizarre characters.
Mounted on sturdy horses, the snail barker, the frost sniffer and the street sweeper will parade through the cobbled streets. Among them, the most eloquent is undoubtedly the Pfengschtflitteri or Whitsun Leavesman, the embodiment of the spirit of nature. His voice echoes through the village, delivering a humorous speech which, despite its charm, fails to convince the villagers. The villagers, anxious to ensure a good harvest, decided to throw the Pentecost leaf into the river.
A tradition as unexpected as it is fascinating, it is said to guarantee good harvests for the coming year. The day ends with another local tradition at 4:30pm: the horse bath. This touching scene will bring the event to a memorable close, leaving behind memories of a day steeped in tradition and celebration.
Open every day of the week from 10am to 6pm, the Ecomusée invites you to discover these unique traditions and immerse yourself in the captivating charm of Alsace. Come and celebrate spring and nature together, in the warm and friendly atmosphere of the village of Ungersheim!

L'ÉCOMUSÉE D'ALSACE, A TRADITIONAL VILLAGE IN THE HEART OF NATURE
--
BUILDINGS & BIODIVERSITY
Today, the Ecomusée d'Alsace consists of a village of 80 buildings representative of Alsace at the beginning of the 20th century, all dismantled from their commune of origin and reassembled in the museum. Around the village, on an area of 97 hectares, you'll find 4 signposted trails to discover biodiversity, as well as agricultural areas in biological transition.
Be curious! Push open the door of each house to discover the treasures it contains: a converted interior, an exhibition, a craftsman's workshop or a stable with animals!

LABEL MUSÉE DE FRANCE
The Ecomusée d'Alsace boasts an exceptional collection of over 40,000 objects, reflecting the daily lives of Alsatians. When the museum was created in 1984, Alsatians became passionate about this adventure and began sending regular donations to the museum.
