  • Inclined plane of Saint-Louis-Arzviller, unique boat lift

  • Castle and typical Lutzelbourg charm

Between peaceful canals, surprising heritage and bucolic landscapes, this stage offers a beautiful transition between Moselle and Alsace.

From the port of Gondrexange, the route follows the quiet banks of the Marne-Rhine canal, skirting the ponds as far as Sarrebourg. This historic town welcomes you with a unique art trail dedicated to Chagall. From the chapel of the Cordeliers, where a monumental stained glass window shines, to the museum exhibiting his emblematic tapestry, this stopover is rich in discoveries.

Returning to the canal, the route continues into the superb Vallée des Éclusiers, a former waterway now converted into a haven of peace. Once closed to navigation, it now attracts walkers and cyclists in search of tranquillity. A stone's throw away, the Inclined Plan of Saint-Louis-Arzviller impresses with its ingenuity: this real boat lift, the only one of its kind in Europe, fascinates young and old alike. Nearby, the hand-crafted crystal glassworks and Alpine tobogganing complete the escapade.

Before reaching Saverne, Lutzelbourg is a charming last stop. Dominated by the remains of its hilltop castle, the town marks the end of the route in Moselle and the entrance to Alsace. Throughout the stage, EuroVelo 5 is well signposted, offering a smooth, accessible route punctuated by beautiful cultural and natural discoveries.
