In the early days of jazz, musicians appropriated the music heard in churches, travelling shows and brass bands, blending blues, spirituals and ragtime. A musical crossbreeding that gave birth to a new artistic expression: jazz.
At the heart of this evolution, the piano plays an essential role. From Scott Joplin to Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, Bud Powell and Oscar Peterson, each pianist left his mark on a chapter of this history.
Pianist Matthieu Roffé, accompanied by a sextet from the Grand Est jazz scene, retraces this epic in 20 musical portraits. A concert rich in styles and influences, between writing and improvisation, to rediscover jazz through the figures who have shaped it.
