Let yourself be carried away by the history of Saint-Jean-au-Marché Church, while discovering the architectural treasures of this beautiful edifice! An emblematic monument in Troyes’ historic center, this church will open its doors to you for an exceptional guided tour. This fascinating event, organized by the Troyes Tourist Office, will take just 45 minutes!
Built in the 11th century, then completely destroyed by Norman raiders, the church of Saint-Jean-au-Marché has been rebuilt and enlarged many times. The fortunes made by the Champagne Fairs in particular contributed to its elevation, resulting in a majestic edifice that has been preserved to the present day.
Comprising 3 naves and 8 bays, dating from the 16th and 13th centuries, this Gothic church magnificently reflects the architectural prowess of the period. Sublime polychrome and grisaille stained-glass windows grace the facades, including an impressive stained-glass painting by Émile Babouot in 1879, entitled « Les âmes du Purgatoire » (« The Souls in Purgatory »). Representative sculptures and paintings, as well as a masterly Italian-style altarpiece, have also taken up residence here, for an even more surprising harmonization. There’s no doubt about it, if you love art and architecture, you’re going to love it!
Aesthetics aside, the Church of Saint-Jean-au-Marché is also worth a visit for the historical events it has witnessed. It was here, for example, that the marriage of King Henry V of England to Catherine of France took place in 1420, and on April 17, 1620, the baptism of Marguerite Bourgeoys, a young woman from Troy, was celebrated.
This guided tour of the church will be a great opportunity to discover the history of the town and the famous people who have left their mark here. Come with your family or friends! The tour will take place in a warm and relaxed atmosphere!
