SARL Château de Vaux
Born into a Trojan family of royal officers, Jacques d'Aubeterre, a cavalry captain, inherited the land of Vaux from his father in the early 18th century. He married the daughter of his neighbor Louis-François Hennequin, lord of Charmont and member of the King's Councils, and obtained the erection in county of his lands of Vaux and Jully. When, around 1716, he undertook the construction of a large residence to match his success, he asked Germain Boffrand, one of the best architects of the Regency, to draw the plans.
Perhaps he had thought a little big, because the work was behind schedule and the creditors were worried. When he died in 1726, the interior fittings were far from being completed. His son had settled in Bavaria in the service of the Elector, an ally of France and future emperor. He returned to the only habitable apartment in the castle to die in 1754.
It was not until six years later that the Marquis de Montmort, who had purchased the estate, had the apartments of this large residence completed.
Charlemagne-Émile de Maupas, who bought the estate in 1855, was close to Napoleon III and a key player in the coup d'état that led to the Second Empire. He modernized the apartments where he retired and led a brilliant life until his death in 1888.
Abandoned before the last war, then uninhabited, the castle experienced a long decline until Philippe Vallery-Radot who, in 1971, carried out the most urgent conservation work. Once again fallen into a state of oblivion which, in the eyes of all, can only lead to inevitable ruin, it was acquired in 2015 by Mr. Edouard Guyot who courageously undertook to revive it.
In Vaux, the quality of the architecture goes hand in hand with that of its grandiose setting. This majestic Regency residence is magnificently enhanced by its location in the middle of a vast clearing, at the end of a large straight driveway, more than two kilometers long, traced in a forest valley.
