Walk in the footsteps of history in the heart of the Verdun battlefield with the Bois Fumin hike, a striking immersion in the fighting of 1916. This trail plunges you into a landscape marked by memory, where each path recounts a fragment of the past.
On June 1, 1916, Charles Delvert wrote in his diary: « This morning, at 8 o’clock, we saw, ahead of us on the slopes of the Hardaumont plateau, German infantrymen coming out like ants when you’ve kicked an anthill. » Based on his testimony, discover one of the best-preserved sectors of the Verdun battlefield. Over the course of a 2.5-hour walk, you’ll explore one of the best-preserved sectors of the Great War. Guided by the poignant testimony of Charles Delvert, you make your way through emotionally-charged terrain. The tour reveals many of the remains still visible: interval shelters, entrenchments, trenches and graves. The wooded slopes of Bois Fumin offer an authentic, unspoilt setting, conducive to understanding the conditions of combat at the time.
This hike is for walkers with good stamina. The route, accessible from the parking lot on the Etang de Vaux embankment, requires suitable equipment to get the most out of the experience.
