Pont-à-Mousson
Halfway between Nancy and Metz, Pont à Mousson literally spans the Moselle. While the town is world-famous for its steel production, it is also home to a famous abbey and a remarkable Renaissance heritage. A real nugget to discover.
A historic escapade in Pont-à-Mousson
More discreet than its two neighbours, Nancy and Metz, the town lies at the foot of the Mousson hill.
The founding of a Jesuit university (and the first in Lorraine!) helped Pont-à-Mousson to spread its influence across Europe for over 200 years, and today the town is an amazing place to visit as a couple or with the family.
For a weekend, let yourself be charmed by its unsuspected heritage treasures and take a deep breath of fresh air and nature in Lorraine!
Discover the Renaissance heritage
Surrounded by arcades, the Place Duroc is a real invitation to stroll around. Linger on a terrace and sample one of the famous beers* still produced in the city. With its distinctive triangular shape, Place Duroc is the only square of its kind in Europe!
It's a great place to start if you want to feel the pulse of the city and explore the Renaissance heritage of its historic heart. One of the most famous facades is undoubtedly that of the House of the Seven Deadly Sins, recognisable by its statues and small tower.
The Abbaye des Prémontrés
Running alongside the Moselle River is the majestic Abbaye des Prémontrés, whose silhouette has become emblematic of the town of Pont-à-Mousson. Founded in the 18th century, it is now a cultural centre with a wide range of activities.
Wander through the corridors, once used by the monks, climb the monumental staircases and enjoy the serenity of the place!
Don't miss the splendid library and chapel. The monument's three gardens offer a natural setting in the heart of Pont-à-Mousson.
A visit to the surprising Musée au fil du papier
Just a stone's throw from Place Duroc, push open the doors of the Musée Au Fil du Papier. Housed in a former Renaissance mansion, the museum traces the history of the city, from the foundations of the Jesuit university to its foundries.
More unusual is the collection of lacquered objects made from papier mâché, the only one of its kind in France! Decorative and everyday objects, and even Oriental-inspired furniture, are on display for all the family to enjoy.
Pont-à-Mousson, stage town for cyclists
Pont-à-Mousson is not only a popular stopover for pleasure boaters, but also for cycling enthusiasts! The banks of the Moselle are designed for pedestrians and cyclists. Ideal for a ride with the kids!
The city is also a stop-off point on the Voie Bleue cycle route, which runs for almost 700 km from the Luxembourg border to Lyon. A great way to combine sport and heritage!
Outdoor activities for all the family
For a bit of height with the family, head for the Butte de Mousson! The bravest of you can get there on foot, after stopping off at the astonishing Fontaine Rouge and its ferruginous waters.
Once you reach the top, your efforts will be rewarded with a superb panorama of the entire surrounding plain. Overlooking the Moselle valley, the ruins of an ancient castle evoke the power of the sovereigns of yesteryear. Children will already be imagining themselves as valiant knights!
For lovers of water activities, the leisure centre is the place to be! In the summer months, swimming, water sports and inflatables are the perfect way to cool off with the whole family! Relax for a weekend in Pont-à-Mousson!
Pont-à-Mousson, the memory of the First World War
Pont-à-Mousson and the Bois le Prêtre site still resonate with the fighting of the First World War. A strategic point during the Great War, the site was the scene of violent confrontations.
On a walk through the Bois le Prêtre forest, the remains and commemorative monuments remind us of the weight of history. There are various routes along which you can walk in the footsteps of the soldiers. A real open-air history book.
