From the Middle Ages to the Renaissance
Sélestat has been awarded the Ville d'Art et d'Histoire (Town of Art and History) label and boasts an exceptional built heritage. All you have to do to appreciate this is stroll along its lively streets, from the Quai des Tanneurs with its timber-framed houses, to the Tour Neuve and its many Renaissance-style churches and town houses.
To discover history in a different way, push open the doors of the Humanist Library, which boasts a rich collection of medieval and Renaissance books and manuscripts. Unique in France, this remarkable collection has been classified by UNESCO. It is a precious testimony to humanist teaching in the 15th and 16th centuries, and a reminder of the role played by the Latin school in Sélestat at that time.
Step back in time at Haut-Koenigsbourg castle
Take the whole family to explore this pink sandstone fortress perched at an altitude of over 750 metres! Visible from Sélestat, the imposing silhouette of Haut-Koenigsbourg castle dominates the Alsace plain. Cross the drawbridge and step back in time: you're plunged right into the Middle Ages! From armoury to dungeons, let the 900 years of history of this castle be told to you. Children (and adults!) will have no trouble imagining themselves in the shoes of a knight!

If you're a nature lover, come and discover the Ill Wald, the nature reserve in the Ried de Sélestat. A veritable green lung for the nearby town, this corner of nature boasts remarkable flora and fauna.
Just a few kilometres from Sélestat, a number of animal parks offer you the chance to make some surprising encounters. Watch the barbary macaques at the Montagne des Singes or the majestic flight of vultures and other birds of prey at the Volerie des Aigles. A little further on, the white stork takes pride of place in an amusement park that's both fun and educational! Children will love it!
The tradition of the Christmas tree in Sélestat
